A Network Gateway is a device or node that allows data flow between networks using different protocols by connecting the networks and then translating the messages from one protocol to another.

Consider gateways as entry and exit points in your network. In physical network gateways, network interface cards (NICs) are used to create an interface between the physical layer, which manages the physical connection with the cable or wireless antenna, and the data link layer, which provides a reliable communication channel.
