PTP, or Precision Time Protocol, is a network-based time synchronization standard, that is designed to provide synchronisation at a nanosecond or even picosecond level.
PTP offers sharper and more granular timing than NTP because it uses hardware timestamping instead of software timestamping, which can itself be subject to latency and consequently is an extra calculation burden.
